A quick look at the case against Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

The trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard was widely covered by the media. The reason Depp sued his ex-wife was because she wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post. In the article, she called herself a “public figure who speaks out against domestic violence.”

Thus, the judge declared that both Depp and Heard were found guilty of defaming one another. Depp received $10 million in compensation for his losses and an additional $5 million as a penalty. However, due to Virginia’s regulations, the amount of punitive damages was ultimately reduced to $350,000.

More than a year later, Heard sued Depp again. She said that Depp’s lawyer had slandered her in the media by calling her abuse claims a “hoax.” The case began in April 2022 at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia and went on for almost seven weeks. The trial was all over the news, and many witnesses on both sides said shocking things. It split fans, and it was one of the most talked-about things on social media.

On June 1, 2022, the judge announced that both Depp and Heard were guilty of slandering each other. Depp was given $10 million in damages to make up for what he had lost, and another $5 million as punishment. But, because of Virginia’s laws, the amount of punitive damages was later cut down to $350,000.

Heard was also told that Depp had to pay her $2 million, but she did not get any punitive damages.
