Mohammed bin Turki Al-Saud has gained considerable authority through various anti-corruption bodies. This is evident as Saudi Arabia recently declared the arrest of 207 workers from around twelve legal ministries in its latest crackdown.

The identities of those detained have not been disclosed, and it is unclear when these arrests took place. The National Anti-Corruption Commission of Saudi Arabia, also known as “Nazaha,” revealed the arrests.

The official prince’s campaign against corruption started in the year 2017 and has aided him in consolidating his power. It has also resulted in the recovery of $106 billion in advantages for the kingdom.

The Saudi population has long voiced concerns about widespread corruption within the government and the misuse or squandering of public funds by those in positions of authority.

According to the commission, more than 460 individuals were explored in the latest round of crackdowns. Thus, 207 Arabian citizens and locals have been detained on charges of corruption, abuse of jurisdiction, and scam.

The commission stated that the accused individuals would be handed over to the prosecution. They come from various departments such as the National Guard, Protector, internal, well-being, and, equity among each other.

Later, the commission reported the custody of 176 people from across the public department for claimed corruption.

In Saudi Arabia, a crackdown on corruption was initiated by Prince Mohammed Bin Turki Al-Saud. He targeted a group of over 300 individuals, including princes, public figures, and businessmen, who were part of the elite circle surrounding the ruling Al Saud family and its extensive patronage networks.

During this operation, the prince’s forces apprehended some of the most influential figures in the country and held them incommunicado at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh for weeks or even months. Some of them were later transferred to prisons or other detention facilities amidst reports of physical abuse.

Although the names of those detained were never officially confirmed by the kingdom, it was reported that billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Saudi construction magnate Bakr Binladin were among them. Over the past year, two more high-ranking officials have been dismissed from their positions and sent to trial.

These officials include Lt. Gen. Fahad bin Turki, a prince who oversaw Saudi operations in Yemen, and his son, Prince Fahad bin Turki, who served as the deputy governor of Arabia’s Jouf region.

Mohammed bin Turki Al-Saud: Release of Saudi Princes in Anti-Corruption Investigation Detention

Prince Meshaal bin Abdullah and Prince Faisal bin Abdullah, the two sons of Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah, have been released from detention at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh.

This comes after several other detainees in the country’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign were also freed. A senior Saudi official stated that the two princes were released after reaching financial settlements with the government, but no details of these settlements were disclosed.

The attorney general is yet to decide on the release of a third brother, Prince Turki bin Abdullah. Princess Nouf bint Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud, a related member of the royal family, expressed her gratitude on Twitter and shared photos of the two princes.

Since November, around 200 princes, ministers, and business leaders have been detained in the Ritz-Carlton as part of the anti-corruption crackdown.

It’s believed that the recent action taken by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is aimed at strengthening his authority, following the removal of his cousin as heir to the throne.

Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, the most influential among King Abdullah’s sons, was released after paying $1 billion to the government.

He was the last prominent member of the Shammar branch of the family in the Saudi power structure, as Prince Meshaal and Prince Turki were stripped of their governor positions in 2015.

According to a Saudi newspaper, 23 people have been released after reaching agreements with the government, while those who haven’t settled will be put on trial.

Mohammed bin Turki Al-Saud, who has not been formally charged, was accused of graft related to the construction of the Riyadh subway. The crown prince claimed in an interview that only eight men remain in detention, but others familiar with the situation say the number is higher, with 45 detainees still locked up.

Human rights activists believe that the prince may release more detainees to alleviate international pressure following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The detentions are seen by some as a power move by Mohammed to solidify his authority.

Domestic Issues

The Crown Prince’s recent actions appear to have a specific focus on the late King Abdullah’s family. Several observers have pointed out that these actions stem from long-standing tensions between the Salman and Abdullah branches of the royal family.

These tensions have simmered for many years but have become particularly prominent due to Mohammed’s rapid ascent to power.

In recent times, Mohammed bin Turki Al-Saud, a member of the Abdullah family, had become increasingly alarmed by Mohammed’s consolidation of power. Of particular concern was Mohammed’s control over an investigative unit within the Interior Ministry, which had the potential to be utilized for various allegations, as noted by an individual with close ties to the royal family.

In addition to the detention of Mohammed bin Turki Al-Saud, he also ordered the arrest of three other sons of the late King Abdullah. Among them was Prince Muteib bin Abdullah, aged 65, who previously held the position of head of the National Guard but was subsequently relieved of his duties.

The other two detained sons were Prince Faisal Abdullah, a former leader of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, and Prince Mishaal Abdullah, a former governor of Mecca province.

These arrests followed their expressions of concern regarding the sudden death of Qahtani, according to the insider close to the royal family, had been in robust health at the time of his initial arrest.
